Leisure Time

With life spans increasing and health care advancements making it possible to stay active for longer, there is no reason to stop being an active member of society after you retire. Even if you've had a career as successful as Dennis Gartman you're going to want to slow down a little, but there are lots of things to do that are both fun and beneficial to those around you. One of the things that you can do to stay busy is to volunteer in your community. You can put all of those years of knowledge to use and help out those in need.

The best thing about working as a volunteer after you retire is that you make the rules about how often you'd like to help and what you'd like to do. If you spent your life inside of an office but have always had a passion for riding horses than you could volunteer to work with children at an equestrian London Ontario barn. Or, if you loved your career working as a salesman, you could now put your energy towards raising money for a local charity.

When you're not going through the routine of going to work every day, it can start to become more difficult to stay active and involved. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to interact with other people in your community and will have a great reason to leave the house every day. If you were once a chef you could teach a cooking lesson Toronto based to other seniors or you could volunteer to help cater a charity event. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities that really are more fun than work.

Studies are now showing that there are also several health benefits to seniors who choose to volunteer. It allows you to stay strong in your physical and mental health and that personal sense of accomplishment can do wonders for your daily attitude and self-confidence. One study showed that just two hours a week of volunteering could result in significant health benefits. You could sell raffle tickets at a local festival for a car sweepstakes one week and volunteer to work with a local arts organization another.

Volunteering is also a great way of spending more time with the people you care about in your life. You could volunteer to work as an assistant coach for one of your grandchildren's sports teams or could take some friends with you to donate your time at some church functions. Whether you're volunteering to be a wedding caterer Toronto for your youngest child's wedding to save them some money or choose to spend some time working with newcomers to our country to help them learn English, there are hundreds of things that you can do in your retirement to help out.
